👉 When Caregiving Takes Over: A Lesson in Boundaries
👉 When Caregiving Takes Over: A Lesson in Boundaries
For two weeks, my life wasn’t my own.
✔️ My parents moved in.
✔️ My home became their space.
✔️ My days dissolved into driving, cooking, cleaning, mediating, and event planning.
All while my own needs faded into the background.
I love my family.
My dad did his best to help, even as he navigates the exhaustion of caring for my mom, who’s showing early signs of dementia.
My oldest son stepped up when I asked.
But my youngest? Let’s just say it wasn’t easy.
Then I hit a wall. I was exhausted, overwhelmed, and, if I’m honest, a bit resentful. Because somewhere in the middle of it all,
🙁 I lost myself.
Here’s the hard truth:
📌 Boundaries aren’t selfish. They’re survival.
You can’t pour from an empty cup. You can’t be there for others if you’re not there for yourself.
As a transformational coach, I knowthis. Yet even I forgot.
And it’s normal: we want to be there for others. But I had to leave for a couple of days, not for a break, but to support my partner after his dad passed.
In that space, I realized:
📌 I can’t keep giving what I don’t have.
This is something I see often when I am coaching clients. People feel guilty for admitting they can’t cope, for needing a break.
But here’s the permission slip you’ve been waiting for:
To the men out there (yes, MEN, you’re not immune to this) juggling aging parents, kids, and your own sanity:
✅ You are allowed to need a break.
✅ You are allowed to put yourself first, sometimes.
With over 100 hours of coaching experience, I help men in their prime redefine success on their own terms.
I help them navigate emotions in ways that feel authentic to them.
What Coaching is:
- Therapeutic, but not therapy
- Reflective, not reactive
- Calm, not urgent
- Structured, not chaotic
